Sciences of the Recitation of the Qur’an
Reciting the Qur’an Precisely
“Qur’an’s recitation is a river that nourishes the heart, quenching its thirst of spiritual growth.”
The Qur’an, being the Word of Allah SWT to the whole of humanity, has been preserved in its entirety from paper to speech. Not only was the scripture scribed in pen, but the method and style of recitation of the Qur’an was preserved and passed down to generations by great Qurras (reciters) of time.
وَرَتِّلِ ٱلْقُرْءَانَ تَرْتِيلًا
“And recite the Our’an with Tarteel (in a distinct and measured tone).” (Surah Al-Muzzammil Ch. 73 V.4)
Imam Raghib (RA), mentions in Al-Mufradat, the word “Tarteel” originally means “to put together and arrange well the component parts of the word and speech and make it distinct.” (Ma’ariful Qur’an) The purpose of the recitation of the Qur’an is that it should not be recited in haste, but with Tarteel, in a slow and leisurely manner, distinctly, deliberately, and in a well rhythmic tone, as was the recitation of the beloved Prophet (SAW).
